The USS Midway-Heaven on Earth

To understand what we’re trying to accomplish here, please refer back to this blog.

It was Friday April 2, 2021, 4 days away from celebrating Maddie's Golden Birthday. I awoke that morning feeling compelled to surprise her (and by default, her 3-year-old sister) with a beautiful heartfelt field trip. I wanted to enrich their lives by teaching them a piece of US Naval History, as well as enjoying free admission for children 6 and under. Side note, I have an unhealthy obsession with this museum. Since our marriage began in 2008, Katie and I have visited San Diego 12 times and during those 12 visits, 6 have been spent at the USS Midway. I need to relax...

Anyways, it didn’t take much to convince a 5- and 3-year-old to encourage my strange obsession with military history. The day would be spent enjoying a former warship, airplanes, and the famous “Unconditional Surrender Statue”. We loaded the car with water wows, sticker books, snacks, juice boxes, and my old cd case from high school. I don’t know how this happened, but the water wows, stickers, and juice boxes entertained both kiddos for the entire 1 hour and 15-minute journey. I managed to get by on the “Can’t Hardly Wait” soundtrack as well as other horrible but amazing alternative rock...who even calls it alternative rock anymore? We arrived and found a metered parking spot (still had 45 minutes left on it) next to the “Unconditional Surrender Statue” and ate our packed lunch (double savings right there). After the kiddos ate 2 bites of a sandwich, zero apple slices, and 3 oreo cookies we called it a meal and grabbed our touristy photo.

After the short trek to the Midway, we paid the $10.00 parking fee (steal of a deal in downtown San Diego). I paid the single adult admission of $20.00 and I accompanied my 2 free children throughout one of the greatest floating museums ever constructed.

What trip wouldn't be complete without a stop to the World Famous Ghirardelli Chocolate Store.

In closing, we may have made the better half a tad bit jealous, so three days later, we decided to recreate the entire trip. And yes, the kiddos still received free admission.

For those of you keeping score at home, that's 14 trips to San Diego and 8 trips to the USS Midway.

Vaya Con Dios!
